TransLink announces last stop for three well-paid VPs

TransLink will save about $700,00 annually as a result of getting rid of three vice-presidents last week. The three senior executives will receive severance, but spokesman Ken Hardie said details of the payouts are still being worked out and wouldn't be available until the transportation authority issues its 2009 report, in April or May. Details of the VPs' salaries and expenses in 2008 revealed that Sheri Plewes, in charge of capital management and engineering, was the top earner of the dismissed trio with remuneration of $296,860.69, along with expenses of $24,342.13. John Madden, the former VP of human resources and public safety, made $216,189.35 in 2008 and claimed expenses of $16,031.05, while ousted business and technology services VP Terry Peterson received $214,928.51, with $21,766.58 claimed in expenses.

A report from provincial comptroller-general Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland in November criticized the number of TransLink executives -- 28 -- as "excessive." More cuts are possible as a result of the ongoing review. "Public and corporate affairs and planning are the areas that are still under review," said Hardie. "We expect that to be finished by the end of March." Provincial Transportation Minister Shirley Bond was travelling and unavailable for an interview on the TransLink moves, but issued a short statement. "I have no role in TransLink's personnel decisions, but the need for executive reductions was a consideration of the comptroller-general's report," said Bond.
