Catalyst pays city legal costs

The Catalyst Paper Corporation has paid a court-ordered settlement with the City of Port Alberni. The city’s law firm Woodward Walker notified council via letter that they negotiated an $11,500 payment from the paper giant. In December 2009. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Peter Voith dismissed the corporation’s case of unfair industrial taxes against the municipalities of Port Alberni, Powell River and Campbell River. Voith further also ordered the company to pay the city’s legal costs. The company is appealing the decision.

In January, the city commenced legal proceedings to against Catalyst demanding payment of its outstanding municipal tax bill. The tab – which initially stood at $3.3-million – is growing. The company was hit with a 10 per cent penalty that was split five per cent on the due date and five per cent in October. And interest started accruing at $500 per day as of Jan. 1. The bill now stands at $3.79-million, city finance manager Ann Hopkins said.
