Child dies after house fire

A child has died as a result of Tuesday's house fire in Vernon. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says that the 18-month-old child died as a result of his injuries from a fire in a fourplex in the 3600 block of 24th Avenue. “The cause of this fire was determined to be from a child playing with a lighter,” says Molendyk. He says the Vernon RCMP and Vernon Fire Rescue want to issue a safety reminder. “Parents please keep all matches and lighters out of reach of children, and make sure your smoke detectors are in place and working.” The fire broke out just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and sent three people to hospital, the 18-month-old child, another young child and the children's mother.
