House Crash Truck embedded in house

An elderly Vernon couple were shaken but not seriously hurt after a stolen vehicle rammed into their house at 2208 24th Avenue causing extensive damage. RCMP say the Dodge pickup was embedded into the side of the home after a man in his 40s took off from police at high speed about 2:20 am Sunday and then lost control of the vehicle. Molendyk stresses that police did not initiate a chase. Police say the house is likely no longer liveable. A structural engineer is to examine the damage before the truck is removed. The suspect was able to get away.

A stolen truck was embedded into a home in Vernon over the weekend. Just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a traffic services member tried to stop a truck driving erratically in the area of 48th Street and Pleasant Valley Road. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the driver of the truck stopped for the officer, for a few minutes. “The male driver stopped for the officer for a few minutes, however when the officer asked for the registration papers, the driver sped off in the truck,” says Molendyk. He says the truck was a black Dodge, but a run of the license plate showed the plates belonged to a white Ford. “The officer did not initiate a chase of the vehicle. He broadcast the description and details of the truck to other officers working in Vernon. Within minutes, an officer noticed the truck speed past his location.” Molendyk says a few minutes later the officer located the truck, embedded into the side of a house in the 2200 block of 24th Avenue. “The driver was gone. An elderly couple in the house were not injured. The police dog was called to the area, but was not able to locate the suspect. The truck was stolen out of Kamloops in December.” He says the driver of the truck left his dog behind when he fled. The dog is now in the care of Vernon animal control. The damage to the residence is so extensive that the truck remains stuck in the house as of Monday morning. It cannot be removed until the home is examined by an engineer.
