MLA/Mayor Attend Olympic Conference

Tourism officials and politicians from the Okanagan and Thompson will get their chance to impress Olympic visitors today. Local politicians are attending a recpetion in VancouverVernon Monahsee MLA Eric Foster will be at a reception at the BC Pavilion in Vancouver. "The indications are there's going to be tourism operators (and media) from all over the world so it should be a pretty large crowd. And we're going down to help sell the Okanagan and convince them to come up here and have a look around and book some tourism here. That sort of thing." With a quarter million visitors in BC for the Games, and three billion watching on TV, tourism reps call it an amazing opportunity to showcase the region to the world. Vernon mayor Wayne Lippert will be at the same event along with Vernon's economic development officer Kevin Poole. Foster won't be attending any Olympic events but he has bought a ticket for the Paralympic curling final next month, hoping Canada--- and Vernon's Sonya Gaudet -- are in it.

It's not all sports at the Olympics. Okanagan Valley economic development officers and the Thompson-Okanagan Tourism Association hope to attract some international interest to our region. The City of Vernon's economic development officer Kevin Poole says the two groups are hosting an event in downtown Vancouver at BC Showcase in Robson Squre Thursday. Poole says ten to 12 companies from all over the Okanagan will be showcasing their wares. He says bosses from Tolko Industries, Silver Star and Sparkling Hill Resort will be among those attending. They're also inviting some Vancouver developers. Fresh from the Sweden-Germany hockey game, Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert will also be there.
