Okanagan Indian Band turns up heat in dispute with Tolko

Mon, 2010-02-15 17:45. Local News Howard Alexander - Kelowna 105.7 SunFM:
The Okanagan Indian Band isn't making life easy for Tolko Industries. The two parties have been involved in a dispute over logging rights in the Browns Creek Watershed on the west side of Okanagan Lake near Vernon. Chief Fabian Alexis has sent a letter to Tolko advising that company or contractor vehicles will no longer be allowed on Westside Road through the reserve. Alexis accuses the forestry company of not engaging in meaningful dialogue to resolve the band's concerns. He also says Tolko has discounted the archaeological assessment process in the area. The company recently won a court battle against the Okanagan Indian Band allowing the company to go ahead with logging -- as long as archeological work was carried out first.
