RCMP tracking some criminal pinpad scammers believe they have been working their way through the Okanagan and into the Kamloops area. Vernon police spokesperson Gord Molendyk says a number of people fell victim in Vernon last week after a pinpad at one local business was switched for a fraudulent one, allowing criminals to obtain personal banking information. He reminds local businesses to contact Ed Howard of the Safe Communities Unit for info on scams. As far as numbers affected, Molendyk says he has heard that one bank has dealt with at least 100 Okanagan residents whose details were compromised. He says there were at least 65 others elsewhere.
A pinpad skimming scam appears to have moved through Kelowna and Vernon and on to Kamloops. Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says he's been told that at least 100 Okanagan residents at one bank have had their banking details compromised and another 65 affected through an unnamed Vernon business. He says such scams are growing more sophisticated: "Investigators now tell us they install devices allowing them to no longer have to go back into the store. They can use an electronic device to just download data through wireless."
Molendyk says most of the Vernon victims were hit by the information thieves last week.

Why the heck don't they tell us which store the problem was at, so we know to check our accounts if we've been there?
Vernon Police; "Oh, we can't name the store because that would mean a drop in business there."
Get serious, by the time its reported the fake Pin pad has been removed. C'mon people use your heads. Besides, when was it Police business to protect the profits of merchants who are too lazy to ensure that their payment options are not secure for their customers?
This is a big DUH.
