School Board chair Bill Turanski says District 22 is no longer trying to sell the former West Vernon school siteIt's not good news for cash strapped school districts. The Ministry of Education has stopped all sales of school properties.Vernon school board chair Bill Turanski (pictured) says that's put a stop to a number of local potential sales."We have been negotiating with the city of Vernon for the West Vernon site, and also with the Dorothy Alexander site (next to West Vernon site), and now of course we can not sell those." Turanski says the ministry will allow the districts to lease the properties, but no sales. He says they'd hoped to sell surplus properties to help pay for the new Vernon Secondary, with about $2.6 million expected. The new school will go ahead, with the total cost projected near 41 million dollars. The government says they'll review that in light of decreased construction costs.
