Clubhouse future debated

Opinions are divided over the future of a high-profile piece of property in Okanagan Landing. On Monday, Vernon council endorsed two possible options for the city-owned Lakers Golf clubhouse on Cummins Road — sell the property for residential development or make it available to a non-profit organization as part of a land transaction. “Both of those options will go to the public for input,” said Mayor Wayne Lippert referring to the waterfront neighbourhood centre plan review. However, some council members have already decided what they want to see there. “I think there is public support for a non-profit group using that building,” said Coun. Mary-Jo O’Keefe. Coun. Bob Spiers, though, wants the site sold for development, and says use of the building by a service club would be a mistake. “We’ve gone through that before,” he said.

The previous council attempted to turn the clubhouse over to the Elks so the city could acquire the Elks hall downtown, but Cummins Road residents protested over noise and traffic and the plan was abandoned. “The residents of the day did not want that down there,” said Lippert. Coun. Patrick Nicol voted against both options put forward by staff because he wants the clubhouse demolished. “It’s been used as greenspace and it should be kept as that,” he said.“Forty or 50 years from now, people will thank those that did it. It could continue to be an oasis.”
