District chips in academy cash

An RCMP youth camp is getting backing from the district of Coldstream but not as much as it was hoping for. Insp. Reg Burgess appealed to council for $1,000 to help run the Jean Minguy Memorial RCMP Youth Academy. Council later granted $500 for the camp, citing the small surplus in discretionary funds and the fact Coldstream is a much smaller municipality than Vernon, which has also been asked for $1,000. “We run a one-week cadet camp,” said Burgess. “It’s a service we provide and I’m hoping mayor and council consider support for this.” Burgess has been asking other Okanagan communities for similar contributions. The academy partners with school districts and accepts about 40 applicants from throughout the Okanagan each year. “A thousand dollars from Vernon and Coldstream doesn’t seem to balance,” said Coun. Pat Cochrane. “I’d move in the future for it to be based on per capita.” Burgess was hoping to secure yearly funding but council prefers the RCMP go through an annual application process.

The camp runs May 2 to 8 this year and simulates RCMP depot life. Cadets spend the week at Vernon army camp and are instructed in law, self defence, police tactics and are exposed to team building, discipline, respect and tolerance training.
