A small northern B-C community embraced Earth Hour, while many Okanagan communities seemed to ignore the event. Burns Lake, west of Prince George, reduced energy consumption by seven per cent between 8:30 and 9:30 on Saturday night. According to figures from BC Hydro, Coldstream had the least reduction among the BC communities listed with 0.1 percent power reduction while Vernon was just slightly better at 0.2 percent.
The provincial average was 1.04 per cent. This year marks the third year of BC Hydro's participation in the event. In 2009, there was a 1.1 per cent reduction in the overall electricity load. In 2008, the drop was measured at two per cent.
