Core Serview Review leads to layoffs
Penticton City Council addressed the media and the public Friday morning regarding the recently completed Core Services Review which resulted in three senior managers with the City being laid off. The three senior managers laid off are Jack Kler, Terry Andreychuck, and Dwayne Berdeniuck. The Core Services Review revealed that Penticton has a long term debt that's about $50 million greater than the average debt in four peer cities. The CSR disclosed that the city's long term debt has grown by 600% over the last decade, while the population has grown just 1-2%. Penticton's operating costs are also between 10 and 95% higher than the peer municipalities used for comparison in the review, North Cowichan, Port Moody, Mission and Vernon.
While more actions are coming to address the debt load, Mayor Dan Ashton wasn't clear if more layoffs would be coming. “We will be working with senior managers with the City of Penticton and council to ensure we are looking at absolutely everything that will effect the outcome of the city in the future,” says Ashton. He says tax increases are not likely to be considered. “The report does not include a finite level of detail upon which the recommendations can (be made.) Information at this level of detail would not be appropriate for sharing publicly as it does contain some City employee's' personal information.” The CSR also showed that the average salary of the taxpayers of Penticton was significantly lower than in the comparison cities. Port Moody had the highest average salary at $50,425, while Penticton's average salary sits at $35,847.
