Police focus on drugs in neighbourhood

Increased police enforcement in one Vernon neighbourhood appears to be paying off. Two suspects were arrested Thursday by officers conducting drug enforcement investigations around the boxing club and recreation complex. “The officers have been following up on concerns from local residents and people using the public recreation facilities in the area about incidents of drug trafficking taking place in the parking lots around these buildings,” said Gord Molendyk, with the RCMP detachment.“It is expected this type of enforcement will continue.”On Thursday, a vehicle with two people in it was observed making transactions in the area. It was followed and then stopped and checked.A quantity of crack cocaine, marijuana, cash and other paraphernalia associated with the drug trafficking trade were found in the vehicle.Two Vernon residents — a 22-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman — were expected to appear in court Friday to answer charges of possession of a controlled drug and trafficking.
