Vernon road projects a go

Two major road construction projects have been given the green light. Vernon council has given early budget approval to road upgrades totalling $2.6 million. “These are two of our larger projects,” said Rob Dickinson, engineering manager. Okanagan Avenue from 36th Street to 39th Street will be reconstructed for $1.3 million because of a deteriorated road surface and utilities. Plans also call for the installation of a bike lane and sidewalks. “This is the last section of the road without sidewalk,” said Dickinson. The other project is also valued at $1.3 million and it covers 20th Street from 43rd Avenue to Harwood Elementary School. “We’ve looked at the age of the sewer in that area and also identified some pedestrian deficits in that area,” said Dickinson. Council support means the design and tender process can get under way on both projects. “Early budget approval provides more available construction time and lowers the contractors’ risk exposure which translates into more competitive bidding and lower contract prices,” said Dickinson.
