On The Beach

It likely won't make any difference to beach goers but talks are continuing over ownership changes to two popular local swimming spots. Kal and Kin beaches are currently owned by the city of Vernon, but Coldstream and the other partners are requesting they be transferred to NORD as a show of good faith to the partnership. BX Silver Star director Mike Macnabb says talks with the city have so far been positive. He says his sense is the city's willing to listen, they'd like a lease rather than a property transfer. But he says the regional district owns many pieces of property in the city, and maybe there's the possibility of a trade. Macnabb says a facilitator will take a closer look at the change, and the cost implications.

The City is totally foolish if they even contemplate such a change. The last major expenditure was for the Sovereign property in Coldstream-really for the benefit primarily for those in Coldstream but mainly out of Vernon's funds.Where are most of the playing fields? In Vernon and mostly paid for by Vernon-look at Marshall Fields-p-aid for 100% by Vernon.Where do they expect sports activities to take place in the future-mainly in Vernon-whopays-Vernon. These suggestions are BS

This provincial mentality needs to come to an end..at the very least, Coldstream, Vernon, North BX, uh,okay, I mean NORD, need to be under one administrative body. soon.

Is there anything else that Macnabb wants for nothing from the City of Vernon.

As a resident of Area C, I am getting tired of demands from Macnabb for assets that we as residents of Area C have never paid for.

As an unelected member of NORD, (acclamation does not constitute being elected) his views do not represent all the Area C residents, save for his acquiescence to the BX-Swan lake self interest group.

Perhaps he has too much time on his hands.

As for hiring another facilitator, who will pay for that?

If you know so much better Robert, you should have run and got either yourself or Macnabb elected in 2008!

So we used to have this innovative (yes, innovative!) cost-sharing and decision-making partnership known as "Greater Vernon" whereby all residents who benefitted from the area's sports fields, multiplex, theatre, beaches and other recreational amenities, etc also paid into it. Yes, innovative! Do you really think Macnabb is/was the impetus for tearing this arrangement apart? And exactly what assets is he "demanding"?

To Erik: we used to have a type of virtual amalgamation under Greater Vernon - but that required cooperation and working together!

The feudal attitudes displayed by the Anonymous poster above and some of our politicians shall continue to prevent anyone from working together for the greater good.

Yes we did, I agree, and I'd really like to see a return to that model

Newsflash: Utopia can never happen here!
Greater Vernon Services was an experiment doomed to failure by the very people responsible for creating it.
It's very existence was based on the vagaries of local politicians. The ideals that saw it created were vision, creativity, effective service delivery and strategic thinking.
Seldom has any local politician ever been credited with vision beyond the next electoral horizon. Creativity is not a quality prized in the bureaucracy that is charged with moving vision to reality. Bureaucrats charged with effective service delivery is one of the most laughable of oxymorons. The GVW experiment became derailed as soon as a new bureaucracy to oversee it was created. Strategic thinking is lost when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of pleasing your constituents, and more importantly, those of your constituents most responsible for getting you re-elected.
In a nutshell; you can't get there from here within a government framework.
