Garbage Rates May Rise More in the Future ??

Coldstreamer has posted the above observations on the "Garbage rates on rise" article.

He says that $5 of the increased landfill tipping (July 5) that increases from $62 to $75 a tonne will be set aside for 'Landfill Closing Costs'. He asserts that this $5/tonne reserve will raise only $250,000 per year towards this statutory reserve BUT $1,000,000 per year is required for the next 25 years. In Vernon's case the recent increases caused a 25% increase in the Residential quarterly garbage fees from $19.23 to $24.12. Business Garbage fees were increased by about 5% from $71.43 to $75 per quarter.

If there is a $1,000,000 required each year for maintaining a viable 'Land Closure Reserve' then Tipping Fees will have to be raised and Garbage fees will have to increase.

Coldstreamer has said that he would discuss this on his blog in the near future.
