North End Highway Improvements

It wasn't cheap but the highway landscaping on the north entrance to Vernon, is getting rave reviews. The route had been a mess of weeds since the province ended funding for maintenance a number of years ago. Mike GavinchukSwan Lake BX director Mike Gavinchuk 9Pictured) says a partnership with the city of Vernon and Nurseryland owner Mike Kowaluk, paid-off. "Mike is the back bone of that. He really is and he has staff that knows how to do the landscaping and the city also did a good job." Gavinchuk would also like to see a new entrance sign added by the overpass, similar to the Ogopogo sign in Kelowna. The city provided about $230,000 for the landscaping, while Swan Lake Nurseryland donated $130,000 in funds and supplies as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. Gavinchuk and Area B has provided $3,500 towards the effort including a cheque for $2,000 presented to Mayor Wayne Lippert and council this week. Lippert doesn't take Gavinchuk's support lightly, "This is what local government should be about, working together to improve the community."
