Doctors vote for ban on MMA matches

Meagan Fitzpatrick, Postmedia News August 25, 2010

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — Canada's doctors wrestled with the idea of calling for a ban on mixed martial arts matches at their general council meeting Wednesday, in the end supporting it with a clear majority. The wording of the original motion, brought to the Canadian Medical Association's national meeting by doctors from British Columbia, was changed several times before it was finally put to a vote Wednesday morning. Eighty-four per cent of delegates at the meeting, which is known as the medical profession's parliament, voted to call for a ban on mixed martial arts prize-fighting matches in Canada. The intent of the modified motion was to avoid calling for recreational forms of martial arts to be outlawed.
