Golden-Field August long weekend proving fatal on BC roads

RCMP investigators from the Golden Detachment and the Trans Canada East Traffic Services responded to a two vehicle head on collision resulting in a six person traffic a fatality on Sunday August 1st, 2010. At approx 11:35 a.m. Trans Canada East Traffic Services in Golden responded to a 2 vehicle MVI on Hwy 1 approx 20 kms east of Golden, B.C. Initial investigation revealed a west bound traveling mini-van crossed the center line and collided with an east bound traveling motorhome. The driver and passenger in the motorhome where treated for non-life threatening injuries. "Investigators including two collision reconstructionist analysts attended to examine the scene in order to assist in determining the causal factors of the crash. A mechanical inspection of the mini van will be completed in order to verify it's mechanical integrity. Investigators suspect that driver fatigue or driver inattention may have been contributing factors. It has been determined that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in this collision however, it was noted that 4 of the 6 passengers were not wearing seatbelts" stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk. The 6 occupants of the mini-van were deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased are not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin. The Golden RCMP Victim Assistance staff will continue to assist the affected families.

RCMP Traffic Services and the BC Coroners office are continuing their investigation. "As the 2010 August long weekend comes to a close with a mounting accidental death toll, we implore that the motoring and holidaying public please keep safety in mind when enjoying their leasure activities and on the travel portion of their vacation" stated Cpl Dan Moskaluk "The RCMP across British Columbia will be out doing our part in keeping our communities and highways safe for all to use, all we ask is that you do your part and consider safety first" added Cpl Dan Moskaluk.
