Grid Road Completion Delayed

Grid Road construction looking east from College Way (P.McIntyre)The new Grid Road being built in Coldstream may be completed on budget--- but it won't be done as soon as originally planned. District administrator Mike Stamhuis says the Manitoba company building the (roughly) $730,000 bridge span to go under the rail tracks can't deliver the product until early November. "What that means is the tentative completion date for the project won't be until May of next year." Stamhuis says it will delay the timeline for the project connecting Kalamalka Road and College Way, about a month. He says it won't affect the grants for the road, but it may mean the loss of some funds for the multi-use- pathway. We will have the majority of the pathway built in phase one, but we'll only have it partially built for phase two so a small portion of the grant may be affected." Stamhuis the grant for the pathway is $500,000 on a one third basis, and the District may not be able to receive all of that as the deadline for completion at the end of March won't be met.

However, he says that amount could be made up by a lower cost for the bridge. Stamhuis says the project is on target for its $6.9 million budget. "There's been three main components. We tendered phase one and it came in a little bit under budget. We've tendered the bridge. It's come in a little under budget, and now we're waiting for the tender for phase two (area by the railway tracks east to Kal Lake and Husband Roads.) The phase two tender will close on August 12, with a report to council on the 23rd for that award.
