HST Petition Approved and must go to 10 member SELECT Committee.

The Fight HST campaign is successful, and this 10 member committee (6 liberals and 4 NDP) will decide whether to recommend that the anti-tax bill and petition be forwarded directly to the legislature or put to a province-wide vote.

The Recall and Initiative Act specifies that the committee must meet within 30 days of receiving from Elections B.C. an initiative petition and its accompanying draft legislation. The panel has 90 days to decide whether to table a report recommending that the draft bill be introduced in the legislature, or to refer the initiative petition and draft bill to the chief electoral officer for a referendum. If the latter recommendation is made, a referendum will be held on September 24, 2011.

Five of the six B.C. Liberal MLAs on the legislative committee that is expected to decide what to do with the anti–HST petition are on the recall hit list drawn up by opponents of the revenue measure. They include Kamloops–North Thompson MLA Terry Lake, who’s also the convener of the select standing committee on legislative initiatives. The other B.C. Liberal MLAs on the committee who could be subject to recall campaigns are Eric Foster (Vernon-Monashee), Richard Lee (Burnaby North), Pat Pimm (Peace River North), and John Slater (Boundary-Similkameen).

Now shall we all sing together the new hymn, "Shall we gather for Recall".
