Polson Park upgrades

Betty Selin 8/16/2010 105.7 SUNFM:

Mayor Wayne Lippert says Polson Park users will see some restrictions in Vernon's premier green space when construction begins next month on a pavillion. The 1.2-million-dollar structure will be positioned right where the old grandstand sat. Lippert says that saves moving the infrastructure and adding to the cost. "To change it to another location was talked about but it involved a lot more work. Any of the information that we got from the public and any of the plans we looked at - it didn't really make sense to move it." Despite the delay to the start of construction, Lippert says the pavillion is still expected to be finished next spring.

Polson Park field (P.McIntyre)It's taken four years since a major fire -- but work is finally ready to proceed on a new facility in Polson Park. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chairman Wayne Lippert says construction on a multi purpose pavilion will start this month. It will be on the site of the former grandstand torched by an undetermined arsonist in August 2006. Lippert says the work shouldn't inconvenience park users. "It will restrict some users obviously because there will be construction going on but for the park itself, we expect the users will still be able to use the majority of it." Lippert says locating it where the grandstands were, makes sense. "That's where the infrastructure was, for water and sewer lines. To change it to another location was talked about, but then you're having to dig it up and do a lot more work." When completed, the $1.2 million dollar facility--- funded through fire insurance---will include a performance area, washrooms, storage and a concession. Photo: Polson Park field (P.McIntyre)
