Three people are in custody in connection with an armed robbery at a downtown Vernon bank Friday. Vernon RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at the downtown Scotiabank branch on 30th Avenue at 3:40 p.m. “A male suspect entered the bank and demanded cash from the teller,” said Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk. “The suspect did leave with an undisclosed amount of cash.” While he was in the bank, the suspect, wearing a black hoodie, sunglasses, ball cap and bandana, discharged some pepper spray. Several bank employees had to be treated after coming in contact with the spray. The suspect dropped his bandana outside the bank and fled into a waiting vehicle. Police immediately started searching for the vehicle, and located it heading north on Highway 97A. It was stopped in the Otter Lake Cross Road and Highway 97A area of Spallumcheen in a gravel pit. Three suspects – two men and a woman – were taken in to custody. “There was also cash recovered at the time of the arrests,” said Molendyk. The woman is from the Salmon Arm area and had outstanding warrants for her arrest. The men are both of no fixed address. The trio was expected to face a justice of the peace to be remanded into custody over the weekend. It’s believed they’ll make their first court appearance Monday. The case remains under investigation.
