The victim of the first homicide in Vernon is a Lumby man whose body, police now say, was dismembered. Vernon RCMP identified Nathan John Mayrhofer, 32, as the person found in a third-floor apartment at the Villacare Place Apartments on 33rd Avenue Thursday evening. Mayrhofer was confirmed as the victim after a forensic autopsy took two days to complete in Kamloops. Police are still being tight-lipped on the details surrounding Mayrhofer's death. "As has been previously stated, this is a complex case to investigate," said Vernon RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk. "The case involved dismemberment of the body, the victim was identified only after the autopsy was conducted. Investigators have been in contact with the victim’s family throughout this investigation." The accused, Kenneth Barter, 37, is undergoing a 30-day psychiatric remand. Barter is expected to make his next court appearance on Sept. 9.
