Municipal politicians are gathering in Whistler this week to decide whether to extend their terms of office to four years. The B.C. government would have to amend the Local Government Act to extend the terms of councillors and school trustees beyond the existing three years. However, Surrey Councilor Barbara Steele, the incoming president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities,
said provincial politicians have promised to abide by the decision made by delegates at their annual four day convention, beginning tomorrow. She expects a spirited debate among municipal officials. She notes some smaller communities already have difficulty finding candidates willing to make even a three-year commitment to a job, which often features low pay, long hours, and a lack of public recognition or respect. That noted, among the resolutions put forward for debate at the convention is one from the District of Hudson’s Hope, calling for three-year terms to be maintained.

What an audacious bunch of self serving people. The Councils in BC have to abide by the decision made at this Swivel Servant driven covention.
Perhaps they should have a motion before them that states, We serve at the pleasure of our citizens and don't tell them what or what not to do.
If it such an important issue to extend their terms to four years, let them put it before the Voters to decide.
