Assessment Office Closes Friday -Vernon Workers Commute to Kelowna

BC Assessment offices in Vernon and Penticton are closing Friday. CUPE Rep, Kevin McPhail says it's not just about calling the regional office in Kelowna, but it's a hassle if you want a face to face meeting. McPhail also says it is a dangerous commute for the 20 workers. Two have opted for retirement. As for the 400-thousand the government claims they're saving, he doesn't buy it. McPhail says they've filed a FOI regarding leases

The mayor and council and the regional district did not try very hard to keep the office and the jobs here in Vernon. It was not only a matter of jobs but also convenience for those in the North Okanagan. Shame on all the local politicians. What did Foster have to say about it-"sweet Nothing"

99.6 per cent of the Public didn't know where the Office in Vernon was or were ever in it.

It is a simple matter when you receive your annual assessment to make a phone call and discuss your concerns. In most cases your questions will be answered.

As to the people driving to Kelowna everyday, there are hundreds of people from Vernon that do it without any problem.

Students do it as well and they are not getting union wages.
