After sorting through a number of submissions for a curbside collection program, city staff have provided a recommendation to council regarding a contract to provide garbage and recycling pickup. At Tuesday’s meeting of the city’s development and planning committee, a depleted city council gave initial approval to a staff recommendation to enter into a contract with Aldon Waste Systems Ltd. of Lumby. Absent from the meeting, which was held on the first day of school, were Couns. Alan Harrison, Ken Jamieson and Debbie Cannon. The staff report on the curbside solid waste and recycling program will now head to city council’s next meeting, Monday, Sept. 13, for consideration. Those council members present Tuesday were supportive of staff’s recommendation.
The estimated cost for solid waste (garbage) and recycling pickup would be $11.07 per month for each single-family dwelling. That cost would include one bag of garbage per week as well as unlimited recycling once every two weeks.

Don Quixote Note: In Vernon a quarterly charge for Garbage just went up to $24.12 from $19.23 and recycling increased from $5.50 to $8.28 for residential single family service.
This is a total of $32.40 per quarter or $10.80 per month. ( an increase from $8.24 per month)
We are 27 cents per month cheaper at present rates than the proposed Salmon Arm rate that will take effect on Jan 1, 2011. Mind you we also get 2 garbage bags per week.
