DVA sees interim parking as Band-Aid fix

The Downtown Vernon Association is temporarily happy with the city’s plans to establish 28 temporary parking stalls on the site of the former Vernon Medical Clinic on 31st Avenue. The city announced Monday that work will begin by the end of October on a pedestrian walkway across the site between 31st and 32nd Avenues. Grass and irrigation will be added to the site. Temporary lane closures will prohibit through-traffic in the lane, pending discussions with impacted businesses, and a temporary parking lot will be put in.  A total of 17 on-street parking spots will be lost when 31st Avenue between 30th and 31st Streets is closed to become the new transit terminus, but 33 public parking spots will be gained, with 25 of them coming on Coldstream Avenue (angle parking), where the transit terminus currently exists, and eight more on 30th Avenue.  “The approval of 28 temporary parking stalls on the medical clinic lot, is a positive thing, and the DVA is pleased that council listened to this request by our membership,” said Ruth Hoyte DVA president. “But the key operative word, however, is ‘temporary.’”

Hoyte said the temporary parking does not address the net loss of parking eliminated on 34th Street nor the proposed elimination of parking along the planned 30th Street corridor.  City staff confirmed several parking spaces were lost when 34th Street was recently upgraded, but said no plans have been finalized for elimination of parking along the 30th Street corridor.  Hoyte said her organization has been working closely with the city on well-researched parking solutions.  “The DVA would like to see the formation of a parking commission to monitor and review parking issues, as well as have available a complete parking inventory and clear financial statements as they relate to parking revenue and expenditures,” said Hoyte. “Finally we kindly request the city not eliminate any further parking downtown until an overall parking strategy is adopted.”
