Coldstream residents will now be flushing even more money down the drain for unexpected sewer costs. The district has implemented an increased consumption rate of $1.54 per cubic metre – up from $1.26. The hike, plus use of reserve funds, is needed to cover treatment and disposal costs sought by Vernon (which owns and operates the sewer treatment plant) reaching $850,000. Trevor Seibel, Coldstream’s director of financial administration, said the increased costs being sought by Vernon are due to an unexpected major increase in sewage coming from Coldstream. Coldstream is still looking into the issue to determine where the increase came from. The possibility of someone illegally dumping excess sewage into the system has been flushed. “It would have to be fleets and fleets of trucks,” said Seibel. Coun. Gyula Kiss was the lone opponent to the new sewer costs.
