Jim Hart returns to politics

JAMES MILLER  The Okanagan Saturday  2010-09-25
Former area member of Parliament Jim Hart has joined the B.C. Conservative Party.  In a press release issued Friday, the party announced the former Reform/Canadian Alliance MP for Okanagan-Coquihalla will become a member of the provincial party‘s "tactical advisory board."  After two terms as a school board trustee, Hart was elected to Parliament in 1993 and re-elected in 1997. He holds his spot in Canadian history for stepping down, allowing then-Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day to run in a byelection in the riding.   "I want to help the B.C. Conservative Party to bring back representation to the people of British Columbia that has been lost under the B.C. Liberals. The B.C. Conservative Party is a true conservative movement that represents an opportunity for positive change in the next election," Hart said in the release. Hart, 55, was unavailable for comment as he‘s doing consulting work in Afghanistan related to the country‘s election.  Merv Unger, communications director for the party, said it‘s unknown at this time if Hart will run as a candidate in the 2013 provincial election.  "That‘s something you‘d have to ask him, but my guess is he‘s leaning more towards it," said Unger.  The B.C. Conservative Party will hold its annual general meeting and convention Oct. 16 at the University of British Columbia. Although the Conservatives ran only 24 candidates in the 2009 provincial election, there was a strong presence in the Okanagan. Collectively, the Conservatives managed only 2.4 per cent of the popular vote.

Has he ever left politics? Here is a brief paragraph of his latest escapades:

In the fall of 2008, Jim Hart was offered a position with Management Systems International (MSI) to work in Baghdad, Iraq as Senior Legislative Adviser on a multi-year contract to assist in strengthening the Council of Representatives (COR) Iraq's national parliament. Mr Hart accepted the position and in June of 2009 he was promoted to the position of Chief of Party, heading the field operations and programming of the Iraq Legislative Strengthening Program (ILSP) a multi-million dollar USAID development program.
