Mayor Rick Green was censured and his appointments to two major regional municipal committees rescinded by the council of the Township of Langley on Monday. Green’s appointments to the Greater Vancouver Regional District (nee Metro Vancouver) municipal directors board and the Fraser Health Municipal Government Advisory Council were rescinded by council. The vote came after council hired an outside law firm “with expertise in municipal law” to review the actions of the mayor who convened an “emergency” closed-door meeting of council to discuss an anonymous letter he had received with “enclosed corporate records” that he felt might support allegations of improper or unlawful conduct on the part of certain Langley residents and a municipal employee. On June 14, 2010, Green told council that the corporate records sent to him with the anonymous letter “might have been improperly removed or copied from his office.” “The mayor’s statement questioned the security of his office, noting that the locks had not been changed following his election and that keys to his office were held by a number of municipal employees,” said the release.
On July 26, council passed a resolution finding the mayor misrepresented his knowledge of the “true facts” and failed to disclose his knowledge of the “true facts.” “Council voted to censure Mayor Rick Green and to rescind all [of his] previous appointments effective as of today’s date for the duration of his term of office,” said a news release from the Township of Langley on Monday.
