Phillip Fends Off 'Strong Challenge'

Stewart PhillipStewart Phillip has won a fifth term as president of the BC Union of Indian chiefs. The Penticton resident and Okanagan Nation Grand Chief had 62 percent of the votes at the group's annual assembly in Vancouver, to defeat Wayne Christian of the Splats'in Band in Enderby (59 votes to 36). Stewart tells KISS FM, "Chief Wayne Christian is a very significant political voice throughout the Interior and province of BC. Without question, it was the strongest challenge (he's had) to date." As he heads into a new three year term, the 60 year old Phillip says the key issues are the Taseko Prosperity gold-copper mine proposal in the Cariboo, the Enbridge pipeline, and the Site C dam.
