Two Councillors Call for Skating Rink in Polson Park

Council views Masterplan, proposed upgrades could cost millions

City councillor Jack Gilroy would like to skate in Polson Park with his grandchildren. An ice rink has not been included in a park master plan and both Gilroy and councillor Patrick Nicol have asked the landscape architect to reconsider the matter. Nicol calls skating the ``most Canadian'' of Canadian past times. Gilroy says more Winter Carnival activities should be held in the park. Designer Catherine Berris says an outdoor rink can be costly and needs staffing. However both councillors insist they are not looking for a big chunk of ice.  Council took a look at the master plan on Monday. While number cruncher Bob Spiers kept to himself his concerns over cost, he indicated there would a discussion on this down the road. Ten million dollars in upgrades are called for over the next ten years.
