RCMP File # 2010-19979 2010-09-05 19:44 PDT
Family members watched a plane crash and burst into flame near Lumby Sunday afternoon, killing the two men on board. At around 3:15 p.m. on September 5, RCMP from the Lumby office were called to a report of a small plane that had crashed shortly after taking off from the Mable Lake Air strip. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says family members were watching the plane as it took off. The plane attempted to return to the landing strip on two occasions, says Molendyk. On the third attempt, the aircraft appeared to shake heavily before crashing into a field owned by the family. The plane caught fire upon impact. Fire and Ambulance personal attended the scene of the crash but both men were found deceased in the wreckage. Weather was unsettled and winds were heavy at the time. The pilot was 53 years old and his passenger was 45 years old. Both are believed to be from the Lumby area. Transport Canada was notified of the crash and will not be attending. The BC Coroners service and the RCMP are continuing their investigation.
