HST flyer to go to 700,000 B.C. residents

CBC News Oct 14, 2010
About 700,000 low-income earners in B.C. are getting flyers in the mail promoting the benefits of the harmonized sales tax.  The mailing, which began Oct. 8, is the latest effort on the part of Premier Gordon Campbell's government to counter what it believes to be misinformation about the HST.  It's sending the flyers to everyone who receives an HST credit.  Individuals with an annual income of up to $20,000 and families with an income of up to $25,000 will receive annual credits of up to $230.  B.C. Finance Minister Colin Hansen said he wants recipients to understand they'll be left with more money in their pockets with the HST. "We want to make sure that British Columbians know how the HST system works and we clearly didn't do a good job of that over the last 12 months," Hansen said Wednesday. "We want to make sure that British Columbians understand the benefits."

In April, Elections BC scuttled one attempt, ruling that the proposed flyer violated the rules limiting advertising during former premier Bill Vander Zalm's anti-HST initiative campaign.A flyer produced in July after the petition campaign ended was held back after the Finance Ministry decided that sentiment against the tax was too high and the attempt could prove counter-productive. It's spending $22,000 to mail the flyer this time. (more)
