Man trapped after crashing into garage

A single-vehicle crash in the North Okanagan Saturday afternoon left an elderly man trapped in his own garage. The crash occured shortly after 3 p.m. on an East Vernon Road property. BX Fire Department Chief Bill Wacey says the man, in his 90's, had been moving his car when he somehow ended up driving at a high rate of speed. Wacey says the vehicle struck a concrete planter and was launched several feet into the air before crashing into the garage, knocking out a support beam. The loss of the support beam caused a partial collapse of the structure, says Wacey. "The main beam, the doors and all the rest of the supports came down on top of the vehicle," he says. A nearby tractor was used to hold up the structure as firefighters cut through the remaining debris surrounding the victim. Aside from cuts to his hands, Wacey says the man was uninjured.
