Parks Change Pondered

Coldstream wants to turn the clock back on the parks review project.

Jim Garlick  Mayor Jim Garlick (pictured) says their original concern was having to wade through all the red tape,  if the District had a problem with a park in Coldstream.  "We would report it to the NORD parks manager. It then goes to the city of Vernon and then to a contractor, and a lot of the time, by the time it get to the point where its happening, it would look a lot different from what our concern was."  Garlick says the scope of the review now appears to include deconstruction of the system, and it has to get back on track.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chairman Wayne Lippert says Coldstream realizes the costs of taking over facilities such as Kal Beach and the dock, would be high.  "It's nice to say we should have control of all these things, but when you look at the costs and liabilities, it's better to be sharing some of them, than try to hold them all on your own."  Garlick told today's GVAC meeting, Coldstream is content with leaving the Vernon Rec Centre as a sub-regional function as it currently is, instead of handing the responsibility to the city. Lippert says there still needs to be more discussion about the review but he says the District's new stance could mean little or no changes to the parks and rec function. "Right now, that looks like a very real possibility, that things will stay close to what they are now."
