City of Penticton lays off 21 workers

The City of Penticton is laying off more workers.  A news conference held at 11 am on Wednesday announced the layoff of four management positions and 17 union positions.  Some of the positions eliminated include the deputy fire chief, two bylaw officers, four police station guards, four positions from Parks and Recreation and several secretarial staff.  Mayor Dan Ashton says layoffs are a result of the recession and adds several other municipalities are facing similar restructuring.  The layoffs are expected to save the city $970,000 in annual savings; the city currently has a $1.7 million structural deficit for next year.  The city says this round of layoffs will likely be the last in the restructuring.
Nine people were laid off earlier in the year.  The city is looking at contracting out the guard services and bylaw parking services.  This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
