Man Asks Police To Shoot Him

RCMP dealt with a suicidal male SundayVernon Mounties say it's a situation their officers face about once a month, having to deal with a suicidal person with mental health issues.  The latest incident happened Sunday morning at 5:35 when a 24 year old man stood outside the RCMP's back door, and confronted officers arriving back at the detachment.
He had no shirt on, and was waving a ratchet.  Police spokesman Gord Molendyk says, "He demanded that the officers shoot him. Our police officer spoke to him and said it was not going to happen, and he was not going to be shot."  Molendyk says the officers were able to arrest the man without incident, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.  He says incidents like this involving people with mental health issues are becoming more common.  "I would say almost monthly our officers are faced with a similar type situation where an individual is challenging the officer in regards to issues similar to that. It's maybe not always so dramatic."  Molendyk says the officers had to use a great deal of diplomacy to deal with the tense situation.
