OKIB Fires 'Risky'

Glen Morrison  Tuesday, 02 November 2010 11:33 107.5 KISSFM:Fire-fighters (file)There's some rethinking going on after the latest fire on the Okanagan Indian Band reserve.  Spallumcheen Mayor Will Hansma says both the municipality and the city of Armstrong are concerned about sending their fire crew as support for fires on band land.  He tells KISS FM,  "Every time we send the guys out there, it's kind of risky. Some of the liability concerns are not being met by the coverage that's there because they're outside our area."  Last week, a fire took out two cabins, while earlier in the summer fire destroyed a number of mobile homes on reserve land.  Hansma says they're looking for a meeting with band chief Fabian Alexis to get a formal agreement on mutual aid, as well as cost sharing. At this point, Hansma says they're operating more on a good neighbour policy.
