Headlines proclaim a spike in food bank use across Canada, and the situation is extremely visible to anyone visiting the local Salvation Army. “In all of the years I’ve been doing this, I haven’t seen shelves this bare,” said Rob Shaw, organizer of the Realtors Food Drive, as he looks around the facility.
The 33rd annual Realtors Food Drive begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with donations going to the food banks in Armstrong, Enderby, Lumby and Vernon. “We live in the community and many of our friends and neighbours are facing difficult times and we want to help,” said Shaw. “There’s people coming to the food bank who are on minimum wage. There are seniors who can’t make ends meet.” In many neighbourhoods in Greater Vernon, grocery bags with notes asking for food donations will be tied to door handles Nov. 30 so residents can be prepared for Wednesday’s collection. “We ask people to leave their porch lights on and we ask them to tie their bags together,” said Shaw.
