Tower brings tax hike

Taxpayers will likely be shelling out a few extra dollars over the next couple years to help cover costs of the new Vernon Jubilee Hospital patient care tower.  The North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District’s budget calls for a 10 per cent increase this year. And it’s likely similar increases will follow in the years ahead.  “We’re going to see increases of about 10 per cent over the next couple years until everything stabilizes,” said director Doug Dirk.  The increase translates into an additional $6 or $7 on the average homeowners’ taxes (which are presently approximately $67 for NOCSRHD).  The hospital district pays 40 per cent of the costs of the hospital through requisition, while the remaining 60 per cent comes from the province.  The VJH Foundation’s Tower of Care campaign is additionally raising funds to equip the new patient care tower. It is anticipated the tower will be able to start accepting patients in September 2011.

More Provincial downloading.
The Province is responsible for delivery of healthcare. They tax for it. So how come local government and charities have to make up the difference to build a needed addition onto a hospital?
