Transit Op Centre Plans Revealed at Sod-Turning Event -Coldstream mayor welcomes upcoming review of regional transit

Plans have been unveiled for a new transit operations and maintainence centre at 25th Avenue and 43rd Street in Vernon. The more than 13-million dollar project, paid for by all three levels of government, is expected to be completed in 2012. During a sod-turing event Wednesday, Mayor Wayne Lippert spoke about how ``tough'' it had been trying to get a new bus a year for the community. He also pointed to the success of the second UBC-O bus. The bus was added in September to get students to early classes. ``From what I understand it's virtually overscribed as well now so transit works,'' Lippert said. ``And, when you put it in the right places and do the right things, it works very, very well.'' Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick said there is no money in the District's budget to help the second bus at this time. He told a small crowd gathered at the site of the transit centre project that financial help for the centre had not been an easy sell but that the District was committed to increased bussing when it ``made sense.'' He welcomed an upcoming review of transit throughout the North Okanagan. Garlick said some communities, such as Armstrong, are paying too much and a review could sort this out. He added that Coldstream subsidizes local passengers to the tune of 12-dollars a ride.
