The proposed 7.8 million dollar sports facility at Okanagan College will next be off to the the Agricultural Land Commission. Coldstream council has supported the application to convert part-- but not all-- of the ten acre site to non farm use. Coldstream Administrator Mike Stamhuis after input from resident Paul Christie, council agreed to ask that the land not being used for the facilities, have a covenant to allow for future agricultural use. He tells KISS FM, "So in effect the covenant
would imply that there would be no buildings, and would limit the amount of development on it so it would revert to a farm use quite easily." He says the area could include grass and be used to augment track facilities, but not developed to the stage it couldn't easily be used for farm related activities. Stamhuis says the covenant would promote the preservation of farm land and make the proposal more favorable to the ALC. He says it could take a couple months for the commission to decide the fate of the application. Vernon council has given its support to send the issue to a referendum in Greater Vernon at a date still to be determined.
