NORD Ups Symphony Funding ////Art Gallery, Vertigo Seek Funds

The North Okanagan Regional District is bumping it's support for the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Chair Herman Halvorson says, "We supported that to the tune of nine-thousand dollars." Halvorson  says they weren't willing to go to the 50 thousand the symphony had requested, but it is up from the current 65 hundred. The symphony is trying to rebound from cuts to its provincial funding.

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is facing a funding crunch. Officials are asking the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee to cover their 15-thousand dollar deficit next year---plus provide  another 40-thousand to invest in the gallery's future, including moving towards a new facility in 2015. Executive director Dauna Grant says they're already operating at a bare bones level.  "We've tried to be very fiscally responsible so we've cut back expenses as much as we can in different areas, and we just find there's no room for contingencies."  Grant says other revenue sources like fundraising is showing fewer returns. "We want to change the focus a bit so we're not fundraising for salaries or operations but for projects that people can get behind, like minor renovations or fundraising for a specific show." The gallery, located under the city parkade on 31st Ave,  had 6,400 guests in 2009.It employs three full time staff, three part timers, and two summer students.

The board will consider the request --along with one for 30-thousand dollars for NORD from Gallery Vertigo --in its upcoming budget discussions.Vertigo artist Katie Brennan told the GVAC they've reached a point where paid staff is a necessity to meet the community's growing needs.
