A few tense moments for members of the Vernon RCMP Thursday evening. At about 7 p.m., police were called to a report of a man with a gun in the 5300 block of 25th Avenue. The caller reported seeing a man with a gun in his hand, making motions as if he was loading it. Police were given the description of a vehicle and discovered it, unoccupied, in the Landing Plaza. Police spokesman, Gord Molendyk, says once the man returned to the vehicle and left the parking lot officers conducted a high-risk take down of the vehicle and driver on 25th Avenue away from the parking lot. "It turns out once again this suspect, a 22-year-old male, was playing with an air soft pistol that looked like a real pistol. Even in daylight, it looks real," says Molendyk. "Police once again want to warn the public to please use common sense when taking these guns in public. The citizens of any community get very concerned when they see someone with a gun on our streets and at a glance you cannot tell if it is not real." Molendyk says police officers will always treat the call as an armed person situation. "Police are concerned it is only a matter of time before someone who thinks it is fun to point or show this type of gun on the streets are going to get hurt or possibly worse because of the actions they took."
