Civic employees may be out of a job when the newly renovated Penticton Community Centre re-opens later this year. The City of Penticton has issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) for the private management and operation of the facility, including associated recreation services. The city says it is issuing the RFP in an effort to offer its residents high-quality recreational facilities and services with fiscally prudent cost implications. "City Council continues to investigate options to reduce the significant financial challenges we are facing while still providing our residents with premier services and facilities," says Mayor Dan Ashton. "It's imperative to seek constructive solutions to the undeniable tough times we are facing economically and all opportunities must be explored for the continued operation of the new community centre." The RFP was issued at noon Friday with a submission dealing of 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 22. The city is looking to secure a five year contract which would begin June 1, 2011. It would include operation of the Penticton Community Centre and all Recreation Department services. The Community Centre is undergoing a $23.3 million expansion and upgrade which includes the addition of a 10-lane short course competition size pool. Two-thirds of the funding has been provided by senior levels of government. Should the private sector be successful in winning the contract, 14 full-time and 13 part-time CUPE positions would be lost. Over the past year, the City of Penticton has laid off more than 40 employees as it attempts to trim its payroll. The city is still looking to trim $870,000 from its 2011 budget.
DON QUIXOTE VS. CITY HALL When an American gets mad, he says "where's my Gun". When a Canadian gets pissed off he says "Where is my pen, I'm going to send a letter to the EDITOR". When the EDITOR won't publish his letter he sets up his own BLOG page. When I received enough support to get a Council Seat the dogma of the establishment became : "Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in." (Only time will tell !)
