Greater Vernon Politicians Reject Increase In Parks Budget - Staff told to get 2011 budget down to zero, use reserve funding

Greater Vernon politicians have directed parks and rec staff to return with a zero budget for the 2011 tax year. General Manager Al McNiven presented a proposed 2.2 percent increase to the Advisory Committee on Thursday. Director Mike Macnabb won support for his motion to use $250,000 in reserve funding for a number of maintainence projects at the Performing Arts Centre and the Wesbild arena. ``If you start looking at some of those numbers, they have gone up almost 100 percent,'' Macnabb pointed out. ``We can't continue to do that and I think we have to be fiscally responsible.'' Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick said the parks budget has jumped over the past 14 years. ``It's doubled and our population has only gone up by about ten percent in the entire area so I think it's time for us to say `okay we've to look at these costs and make these increases reasonable'.'' One item on the list which was questioned is an $80,000 estimate for work to the outside of the Performing Arts Centre. McNiven explained that birds like the insulation. ``Birds seem to like that product and they then peck a hole in the side of the building and a build a nest in behind the insulation.'' ``We've got to find a solution to fill those holes and put a product on there that they can't peck through,'' McNiven said.

Sue the architect for using a product that would cause problems.
