He thought he was going to a meeting, but actually Lloyd Mitchell was on his way to a presentation to name him Vernon's Good Citizen of the Year 2010. Mitchell was presented with the award for his service in a surprise ceremony at Vernon Jubilee Hospital today. Junior Chamber International Vernon president Tehara Bertram made the presentation. "Lloyd has been a resident of Vernon for over 45 years since moving here from New Westminster. Lloyd raised four sons here in Vernon and has worked tirelessly in both his professional career and as a volunteer for the community." The 80 year old former school district employee (was special services coordinator for School District 22 for three decades) before retiring. Since then, he has volunteered for groups like the VJH Hospital Foundation, Prostate Cancer Awareness, John Howard Society, Big Brothers and with All Saints Anglican Church. Mitchell said at the ceremony which included his wife Marion and sons Glenn and Kevin: "I really feel that I've had a most fortunate life in Vernon, and the opportunity to serve others has been a part of that.Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to share in this way as well." Mitchell tells KISS FM, the award shows his service has made a difference. "When people volunteer they give a great deal of their time in many different ways, and I think to have that recognition, it certainly gets appreciated by the person. At least I'm certainly appreciating it right now." The award has been handed out for over 60 years to deserving citizens who follow the JCI group's philosophy that 'service to humanity is the best work of life.'
