The Vernon School District is getting $2600 for the RCMP Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy which, each year, trains selected grades 11 and 12 students interested in a policing career. The money comes from the Vernon Community Policing Society following last autumn's RCMP ball. The funds this year are in memory of volunteer Mary Rose Baldwin, a grandmother who liked to surprise students by pulling a gun during training exercises. Baldwin died in early January. Community Policing's Rachel Zubick says Baldwin holds the honour of ``highest kill'' at the academy. ``She wanted to teach the youth that not everything is as it seems and to expect the unexpected,'' says Zubick.
